Armenia concludes Facility Agreement with CTBTO

07 September, 2016

The government of the Republic of Armenia and the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO) have concluded on September 7 an Agreement titled ”Conduct of Activities Including Post-certification Activities Relating to International Monitoring Facilities on the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty”, shortly titled as Facility Agreement on Auxiliary Seismic Station in Garni.
This Facility Agreement was signed by H.E. Dr. Arman Kirakossian, Permanent Representative of Armenia to the United Nations representing the Armenian government, and CTBTO’s Executive Secretary Mr. Lassina Zerbo.

Facility Agreements lay the political, legal and technical basis for cooperation on all issues related to the establishment and maintenance of an International Monitoring System (IMS) station that may arise between the host country and the CTBTO. This includes the transfer of ownership for the station, arrangements with local station operators, assistance with import of spare parts and physical security of the station. In addition to enhancing IMS coverage in the region and globally, data from this seismic station can be used for civil and scientific uses, for example for studying the Earth’s structure or reporting the location and magnitude of earthquakes.

Following the signing procedure, a meeting between parties took place at the CTBTO office. Parties discussed the current cooperation and future prospects. H.E. Dr. Kirakossian touched upon how important is CTBTO’s support to the Garni Seismic station shown through providing modern equipment as well as vocational consultations and sharing expertize.
