Alexander Schallenberg, Federal Minister of European and Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Austria, will be in Armenia on a working visit from February 2 to 3. The visit is aimed at the further development and deepening of bilateral relations, giving them a qualitative new impulse.

Armenian-Austrian relations have made significant progress in recent years. Austria is of key importance for Armenia as an EU member state. The deepening of cooperation between the two countries is also important from the point of view of interaction in multilateral formats. Austria is one of the unique countries which has provided grants for almost 4 years in order to improve the living conditions of the Syrian Armenians in the Republic of Armenia.

The rich Armenian-Austrian bilateral agenda includes cooperation in the fields of trade, economy, education, cooperation at the parliamentary level, support programs, development of professional capacities, based on which there is a strong legal framework.

Bilateral Relations

Diplomatic relations between the Republic of Armenia and the Republic of Austria were established on January 24, 1992.

On November 28, 2018 Armen Papikyan was appointed Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Armenia to Austria.

On August 28, 2021 Alois Kraut was appointed Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Austria to Armenia (residence: Vienna). In 2021 Klaus Kapper has been appointed the head of the Austrian Development Coordination Office in Armenia.

Trade and economic relations

In the framework of the Armenian-Austrian intergovernmental commission on trade-economic and scientific-technical cooperation, the last, seventh session took place on April 12, 2016 in Vienna. The next session will be held in on February 3, 2022 within the framework of the visit of the Austrian Foreign Minister to Armenia. Since 2013, the Austrian Development Agency (ADA) has been operating in Armenia (headquarters: Tbilisi). The Austrian side attaches importance to the support for socio-economic reforms in Armenia, cooperation in the fields of agriculture, environmental protection, energy, particularly renewable energy production. In that context, the Austrian Development Agency introduced the program of support to the border regions of Armenia.

The trade turnover of the Republic of Armenia with Austria in 2021 in January-November was about 23 million USD.

Political Dialogue

There is a consultation format between the foreign ministries of the two countries. The last Armenian-Austrian political consultations took place in Yerevan in November, 2018.

Interparliamentary cooperation

There is an active cooperation between Armenian and Austrian parliaments. Inter-parliamentary friendship groups operate in the legislative bodies of both countries.

On April 22, 2015 the Austrian Parliament adopted a statement on the recognition and condemnation of the Armenian Genocide.

In November, 2020 the Austrian government decided to allocate 1 million euros of humanitarian aid from the External Disaster Fund to alleviate the consequences of the 44-day war, which was implemented through the ICRC.
