Third “Vienna Diplomatic Cup” - Rapid Chess Tournament

On 8 October, 3rd Vienna Diplomatic Cup - a Rapid Chess Tournament was held at the United Nations Office in Vienna, organised by the Permanent Mission of Armenia and Austrian Chess Federation.

The tournament had more than 70 participants, among them ambassadors, diplomats, and representatives of Austrian ministries and Vienna based international organizations, as well as their family members.

Ambassador and Permanent Representative of the Republic of Armenia Andranik Hovhannisyan, Deputy Director-General of the UNOV Chhaya Kapilashrami, and President of the Austrian Chess Federation Michael Stöttinger delivered opening remarks.

Ambassador Andranik Hovhannisyan in his speech particularly emphasized that chess is a powerful symbol of international solidarity, uniting people around noble game. Much like the mission of the United Nations itself, it is also anchored on the ideals of mutual respect and tolerance.

Ambassador Hovhannisyan briefed on the special significance of chess for Armenia, presenting the country's achievements and contributions to the global chess community.

On December 12, 2019, the UN General Assembly unanimously adopted Resolution 74/22, initiated by Armenia, entitled “World Chess Day,” recognizing the important role of the game in promoting international dialogue, tolerance and understanding. The resolution, co-sponsored by 53 UN Member States, highlights the contribution of chess in promoting education, women’s empowerment, inclusiveness, mutual understanding and universal respect. 

The Vienna Diplomatic Chess Tournament is being held for the third consecutive year, organized through the joint efforts of the Permanent Mission of Armenia and the Austrian Chess Federation.
