Opening of the Conference: "Places of Faith, Places of Memory: Sacral Topography in the Pre-modern Caucasus" held at the Embassy of Armenia in Austria

03 October, 2024

On October 3, the Armenian Embassy in Austria hosted the opening of the scientific conference entitled "Places of Faith, Places of Memory: Sacral Topography in the Pre-modern Caucasus".

In his opening speech, H.E. Armen Papikyan, Ambassador of Armenia to Austria, thanked the organizers of the conference, emphasizing the importance of the theme of the conference in the context of Azerbaijan's ongoing efforts to erase the rich Armenian cultural heritage of Nagorno-Karabakh, and the need to resist historical revisionism, to counter attempts at falsifying history, while promoting scholarly research on the subject.

Archbishop Levon Poghos Zekiyan, a member of the Mkhitaryan Congregation and a renowned Armenologist and philosopher, delivered the keynote address. The event also featured a performance by Aram Ipekjian, who played traditional Armenian melodies on the duduk, including songs by Narekatsi and works by Komitas.

From October 3-5, around 30 scholars from various countries will participate and present their research at the conference, which will take place at the Austrian Academy of Sciences and the University of Vienna. The event is organized in partnership with the Armenian Embassy in Austria, the Association of Austro-Armenian Studies, and the Mkhitaryan Congregation of Vienna.
