35th Anniversary of the Independence of the Republic of Armenia was Solemnly Celebrated in Vienna

On 18 September, a piano recital and reception marking the 35th anniversary of the independence of the Republic of Armenia were held at the banquet hall of renowned Haus der Ingenieure in Vienna.

The celebration opened with welcoming remarks by H.E. Mr. Andranik Hovhannisyan, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of the Republic of Armenia, and H.E. Ambassador Nikolaus Lutterotti, Director General at the Federal Ministry for European and International Affairs of Austria.

In his remarks, Ambassador Hovhannisyan underscored the special significance of Independence Day in Armenia’s millennia-long history. He noted that, for centuries, successive generations of Armenians had struggled and made sacrifices to restore Armenian statehood, guided by the firm conviction that an independent state constitutes a fundamental guarantee for the preservation and advancement of the nation’s identity and rich cultural heritage.

Ambassador Hovhannisyan highly valued the dynamic cooperation established with Austria, including political dialogue, economic, cultural and educational ties, and expressed confidence that these relations would be further deepened through joint efforts. He also addressed cooperation within the framework of the partnership between Armenia and the European Union, highlighting in this regard the first Armenia-EU Summit. Ambassador Hovhannisyan further underscored the significance of the European Political Community Summit held in Yerevan this year, as well as the seventeenth meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP17), which will also be hosted by Armenia.

Presenting Armenia as a staunch advocate of multilateralism, Ambassador Hovhannisyan also highlighted Armenia’s growing engagement in international organisations, referring in particular to Armenia’s chairmanship of the UN Commission on Narcotic Drugs (CND) in Vienna this year.

In his remarks, Director-General Nikolaus Lutterotti congratulated Armenia on the 35th anniversary of its independence, referred to the strong relations between Armenia and Austria, and expressed confidence in their continued active development.

The official remarks were followed by a recital featuring renowned Armenian pianist Nareh Arghamanyan, who performed works by prominent Armenian composers. She was joined by young soprano Karine Mikayelyan.

The evening continued with an official reception, where guests were served Armenian wine and brandy.

The event was attended by representatives of the Federal Ministry for European and International Affairs of Austria and other government institutions, members of parliament, Executive Secretary of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO) Robert Floyd and representatives of other international organisations, ambassadors, permanent representatives and diplomats accredited in Vienna, members of the Armenian community in Austria, journalists, and prominent figures from the fields of culture, arts and science.
