Exhibition and international conference dedicated to the Armenian cultural-religious heritage of Artsakh

On May 11, in the city of Salzburg, Austria, and on May 13-14, in the capital Vienna, major international events dedicated to the Armenian cultural and religious heritage of Artsakh took place with the support of the Armenian Embassy.

An exhibition entitled “Culture in Conflict: Armenian Cultural Heritage of Artsakh” was opened on May 11 at the Faculty of Theology of the Paris Lodron University Salzburg (PLUS), during which the book "Armenian cultural-religious heritage of Artsakh: (Major sites in the territories currently occupied by Azerbaijan)" was presented. H.G. Bishop Vrtanes Abrahamyan, leader of the Artsakh Diocese of the Armenian Apostolic Church, dilivered a welcome address. H.E. Archbishop Hovnan Derderian, Primate of Western Diocese of the Armenian Apostolic Church of North America, and V. Rev. Fr. Garegin Hambardzumyan, Director of Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin's Office for Artsakh spiritual-cultuaral heritage issues also gave speeches. The event was attended by H.E. Archbishop Franz Lackner of Salzburg, President of the Austrian Bishops' Conference, and H.G. Bishop Tiran Petrosyan, Patriarchal Delegate of the Armenian Apostolic Church for Central Europe and Scandinavia.

The event was organized by the Armenian Studies Division of the University of Salzburg Center for the Study of the Christian East and the Austrian Committee for the Preservation of Armenian Cultural Heritage in Artsakh under the leadership of the renowned Armenologist Dr. Jasmine Dum-Tragut.

On May 13-14, an international conference entitled “Culture in Conflict: South Caucasus Today” was held at the Museum of Art History in Vienna. The organizers of the conference were the Armenian Studies Division of the University of Salzburg, Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin's Office for Artsakh spiritual-cultuaral heritage issues, the Blue Shield Austria, the Austrian National Committee of the Roerich Pact, the Austrian Committee for the Preservation of Armenian Cultural Heritage in Artsakh, and the Museum of Art History. At the opening of the conference, the greeting message of H.H. Karekin II, Catholicos of All Armenians, was read. H.E. Armen Papikyan, Ambassador of Armenia to Austria, also delivered opening remarks. Among the speakers were Karl Habsburg-Lothringen, President of Blue Shield Austria, Lori Khachaturyan, Co-founder of Caucasus Heritage Watch, Dr. Jasmine Dum-Tragut, well-known experts from Armenia and beyond.

Within the framework of the conference, on May 13, an exhibition entitled "From Karabakh to Vienna" that includes spiritual and cultural works from Artsakh, was opened in the Monastery of the Mkhitaryan Congregation in Vienna. In display are unique Armenian manuscripts written in Artsakh in the 17th century, Armenian books and periodicals printed in Shushi in the 19th century, high-value carpets woven in Artsakh. The opening of the exhibition was attended by Austrian officials, priests of the Catholic Church, and many guests.
