Commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide in Vienna and Bratislava

28 April, 2025

On April 24, on the occasion of the 110th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide, Andranik Hovhannisyan, Ambassador of the Republic of Armenia to the Slovak Republic, along with the staff of the Embassy, laid a wreath at the Khachkar memorial in Bratislava dedicated to the memory of the victims of the Armenian Genocide.

Ambassador Andranik Hovhannisyan and Honorary Consul of Armenia in Slovakia, Bagrat Hakobyan, delivered speeches during the event.

Representatives of the Armenian community in Slovakia were also present at the ceremony.

On the same day, a commemoration event dedicated to the 110th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide took place near the Franz Werfel monument located in Schillerplatz, Vienna.

Ambassador Andranik Hovhannisyan, together with the diplomats of the Embassy and Permanent Mission of Armenia, laid a wreath at the monument, paying tribute to the memory of the genocide victims.

The Lord's Prayer was delivered by Bishop Tiran Petrosyan, Patriarchal Delegate of the Armenian Apostolic Church for Central Europe and Scandinavia.

In his speech, Ambassador Hovhannisyan emphasized that Armenia is making a significant contribution to international efforts to prevent genocides. At the same time, he highlighted that building a strong, stable, and developed country plays a vital role in genocide prevention.

“I firmly believe that this should be the supreme goal of the Armenian people — to build a country where Armenians can live and create in peace, dignity, and safety, free from external threats and the risk of crimes against humanity. I also believe that this will be a unique tribute to our martyrs,” the Ambassador stated.

Bishop Tiran Petrosyan and representatives of the Armenian community also delivered speeches. Students from the Hovhannes Shiraz School in Vienna performed recitations.

On April 26, under the honorary patronage of the Embassy of Armenia and the Armenian Apostolic Church Community of Austria a concert by the Chamber Orchestra of the Gyumri Branch of the Komitas State Conservatory of Yerevan was held at the Reformed Church of Vienna, dedicated to the 110th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide.

Ambassador Andranik Hovhannisyan and Bishop Tiran Petrosyan, Patriarchal Delegate of the Armenian Apostolic Church for Central Europe and Scandinavia, delivered the opening remarks.

During the concert, works by Armenian and foreign composers were performed.

On April 27, at the St. Hripsime Armenian Apostolic Church in Vienna, Rev. Fr. Andreas Isakhanyan, spiritual pastor of the Armenian Apostolic Community of Austria, performed a commemoration ceremony dedicated to the memory of the canonized martyrs of the Armenian Genocide.

Ambassador Andranik Hovhannisyan delivered a speech at the commemorative ceremony following the liturgy and, together with the diplomats of the Embassy and Permanent Mission of Armenia, laid a wreath at the monument in the church courtyard commemorating the victims of the Armenian Genocide.
