Armenia’s Ancillary Meeting on the sidelines of the 15th UN Congress on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice in Abu Dhabi

On September 27, on the sidelines of the 15th UN Congress on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice taking place in Abu Dhabi, Armenia hosted an ancillary meeting titled "Addressing Crimes That Affect the Environment to Support the Implementation of Global Environmental Commitments."

The meeting was organized as a preparatory discussion for the global processes within the framework of the 17th Conference of the Parties (COP17) to the Convention on Biological Diversity, and formed part of the ongoing efforts towards the first global review of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (KMGBF).

The Minister of Justice of the Republic of Armenia Srbuhi Galyan delivered opening remarks, emphasizing the importance of criminal justice systems in ensuring biodiversity conservation.

The Permanent Representative of the Republic of Armenia to the International Organizations in Vienna, Ambassador Andranik Hovhannisyan moderated the discussions and delivered closing remarks.

The Director of the Operations Division at the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) Bo Mathiasen, and the Executive Director of Investigative Support at INTERPOL Stephen Fry participated as keynote speakers.

The Deputy Minister of Justice of Armenia Anna Karapetyan, as well as speakers from France, Germany, Peru, UNODC, INTERPOL, Council of Europe, and Global Initiative against Transnational Organized Crime (GI-TOC) delivered their remarks in the panel discussion.

The discussion touched upon the need to translate international commitments into national policies and practical measures within the criminal justice sector, as well as the opportunities for expanding international cooperation. Participants exchanged views on the challenges facing the sector and shared good practices for overcoming them.

The Ancillary meeting was co-sponsored by France, Germany, Peru, UNODC, INTERPOL, and GI-TOC.
